Do you know the difference between .002 cents and .002 dollars? The support at Verizon doesn’t. I admit that it’s a hard thing to explain, and judging by some of the comments in this blog, some people don’t agree with me. Math is hard, many people don’t have to use much of it once they are out of school, but this is a funny but practical example of why it’s important to brush up on these things. I’m also obsessed with communication, as well it’s breakdowns, so things like this fascinate me.
What I find the funniest are some of the attempts at trying to help him explain the situation ‘easily.’ Some people even claim to be teachers but are trying to help teach it to the blog, but at some college level of understanding. The best explanation provided, I think, comes from the SomethingAwful community:
You: “If a kilobyte costs two thousandths of a cent, what’s a thousand kilobytes?”
Them: “Two cents.”
You: “How many thousands of kilobytes did I use?”
Them: “Thirty-five.”
You: “What’s two cents times thirty-five?”
Them: “Seventy.”
You: “Seventy what?”
Them: “Seventy cents. oh…”
It’s not only practical, but it’s common sense, and no fractions involved, haha.
