Jumping the Shark
The term “Jumping the Shark” refers to the concept when a show ‘reaches it’s peak,’ and then declines. Symbolically, it’s usually when the writers of the show create some situation or moment in the show that is either ridiculous or just changes the plot and path of the show in a big and bad way.
And of course there’s a site that’s been around for a while that helps users vote on what episodes or ‘moments’ in a show’s career that they jumped the shark. Some are heated debates if they even jumped are not, most are very specific episodes. Check it out: Jump the Shark: Has Your Favorite TV Show Reached Its Peak? Jump The Shark
And last but not least, the moment in which the term was named after. The oldschool sitcom “Happy Days,” which featured the ever-cool Fonze, had an episode in which Fonze had to literally jump over a shark in the water while water-skiiing.
