Christians hadn't existed until Christ had died and ascended to heaven. Before Christ's birth, death, and resurrection there were just Israelites who were God's chosen people and obeyed Him. A Christian accept Christ as their savior and believe that they have been redeemed by his death, burial and resurrection. If that had not happened historically yet, then no one can be Christian. Though He did exist before he took on the flesh, He had not yet redeemed anyone until He had died.
