Social Networks by Country Usage

A graphic chartygraph showing useage statistics of which countries mainly use what social network. It could serve to be a little more detailed (i.e. instead of coloring an entire country, show another graph with how many of what country use what network, etc etc…) Chart is in Frenchineese so you can’t read all the crazy French words, but it’s pretty pictures.

GDC Adventures: Part I: Introduction!

So, after spending some time typing all this stuff up, I realize that it’s actually longer then a single post should be. In the spirit of bloggeration, I’m going to chop it to hell, and feed it to you in delicious bite-sized chunks of adventure. They may or may not be in chronological order, I’ll just kind of slap them up like I do to your mom.

This being the first, I should give some sort of summary or something.

In summary, this weeks adventures was rad.

For those unfamiliar, the GDC is a yearly con for game developers. /obvious. It’s focus this year in particular is best bulleted as follows:

  • Worlds in Motion (I.e. virtual worlds and MMOs)
  • Casual Gaming (Bejeweled, Peggle, Diner Dash, OH MY.)
  • Mobile Gaming (Cellphones!)
  • International stuff (cross country and cross cultural boundary breaking)

There was, of course, other things, but this is what seemed to stand out, and most in my face.

In a bit of a last-minute decision, I got to head up there with my new job, as I’m the new lead multimedia guy, which will entail some game developery stuff. Some of the stuff I went to was a bit topical, geared towards investors or business people, but there was some insight, as some of the panels were run by famous casual gamers. I peeked at some of the Worlds in Motion summit stuff, got to see Raph Koster (who’s book has become my bible,) and meet Leigh Alexander, who writes awesome bloggeration and who turned out to be a long time friend-of-a-friend.

The summit stuff was both Monday and Tuesday, all day. I hopped back and forth between the Worlds in Motion stuff, and the Casual Games stuff, mostly when there was nothing relevant, (Like I personally had no need to go to the ‘learn about getting venture capitol’ summit, etc, etc.)

Some panels were boring and I caught myself falling asleep a.k.a. going to college, but others were really inspirational and refreshing. Raphs keynote-esque speech touched upon some pretty serious points, i.e. let’s make virtual worlds that help starving kids in Africa, as well as game-design related ones, i.e. we have cool tools to play games with millions of strangers but we end up hiding in our guilds and on our vents and playing with people we know and are comfortable with.

I may or may not elaborate on some of these concepts, we’ll see, I want to make sure I get everything covered though. So let’s do that now, why don’t we?
