WTF is going on?

Ok let’s see if I can get up to speed. It’s time for BULLET POINTS! Epic post is epic, come adventure after the cut!

  • So previously, we had been sanding off the nasty lumps and scary shit from the walls in the bathroom and main room of my apartment. The landlord mentioned that the building inspector was coming to check things, mainly that the fire alarms work, and that we had to put the plates that cover the light switches and electrical outlets back on. So we did so, and everything checked out.
  • Well the following Monday rolls around, and the landlord calls me and tells me that the building inspector wants to come back after stuff has been painted, and that the sanded stuff needed to be finished by the 15th or so.
  • Fuck.
  • So this weekend was set aside to work my ass off, and asses were indeed worked off.
  • Saturday was a non-stop painting attack in the Bathroom. Taping off the tile, spackling weird holes and whatnot,
  • As of now, barring a doorknob that will get attached once the paint on the door dries, my bathroom is ‘done.’ Barring what I know of some scary things, like rotten wood and holes in the back of the cabinets, it feels clean now. As I may have said before, it’s one of those things that you need in order to have peace of mind.
  • Sunday was the attack of the main room. It’s sort of the ‘living room’ but it’s probably half of the apartment so it’s been called ‘the big room’ in my head for this entire time. We got three out of the four walls painted, and a little of the ceiling. So sore.
  • All that’s truly left of the ‘ew omg dirty gross’ stuff is the kitchen. It’s going to be the last of the pwneration, but since we didn’t sand anything off the walls, it’s not part of the ‘OMG FINISH BEFORE BUILDING INSPECTOR COMES!’ We have to sand and paint the kitchen drawers we stripped the paint from, but that should be easy.
  • I think I’m going to have to take a day off in order to get most of this stuff done… I’m still toying with what day that might be. It’d make the most sense to do Friday right? The bosses say whenever is fine, so who knows.
  • So white paint slowly creeps over the ugly off-white walls, and as that happens, I become a little more comfy and mentally sound.
  • The new job is amazing, to say the least. I’m past my neck in working out a development pipeline, and various game prototypes. Every day is a surprise, in that ‘the next thing you know it’s 5pm.’ This is honestly the first job I’ve ever had that the clock watches ME. I.e. instead of “OMG it’s ONLY 11am” it’s “OMG It’s ALREADY 6PM.” I’m sure my tune will change eventually but for now it’s a much needed pile of awesome. It doesn’t help that my computers at home are the suck, compared to the new awesome box I have at work, (Named Joey, as in “from Hackers…”) And also that my apartment is still a mess. Look, the office has lovesacs and an endless supply of lots of different kinds of sodas… I can live there, right?
  • I’ve been slowly but surely resorting my life using the Getting Things Done methodology. I have a series of google docs that have collected my piles of mind garbage, and I’m finally sorting it all out and filtering it through this system. My projects are neatly laid out in front of me, (and there’s piles, but they are at least piles,) and overall I think I have become much more mentally prepared to say ‘ok I don’t have the time to work on all these things at once…’ Seeing all of my project ideas all stacked up in one place is kind of an amazing thing to see, because you realize that you really can’t do them all at the same time, so you really just have to pick one and work at it, one at a time.
  • I managed to get through all of my previous documents and sort them out properly, but then I let my current moleskin go for way too long without sorting it out, so now I’ve got to go through that as well.
  • Then once that’s done, I have about 400 (no lie) ’saved posts’ in this blog, mostly just serving as a bookmark of sorts… I will go through them, find like links and post concepts, possibly release them as huge 10-link posts, and get caught up.
  • After that I have a ton of firefox bookmarks that need to be sorted out, because they are making me crazy as well.
  • I finished my huge freelance project finally, after about 6 months (5 months + a few weeks of reruns during winter) of weekly missions… In case I didn’t mention it, I’ve been making missions for a flash game we made for Stargate: Atlantis. Click here to see an example. If you want to try more, just increment the number, all the way up to 20. Yes, there are 20 missions. I said 5 months, yeah? This has been something I’ve been working on EVERY WEEK for all this time, so it’s kind of amazing to have my free time back.
  • The one last freelance morsel I have on my plate is tweaking a photo gallery concept for a friend from my old job. I have one thing left to do for that, and then I’m free from freelance!
  • So I’m knocking off chunks of work, and my mouth is watering to try to get into some of my personal projects, and/or be able to spend time on previous ones like EndgameRadio.
  • My first big ideas are to ‘re-establish my online presence,’ which means a sit-down with myself to brainstorm and figure out what I’m doing with all these websites, and what better way can I arrange them all to promote myself as a creative and unique snowflake.
  • The other idea fighting to be made is what I’m calling a ‘garrys mod comic.’ I have an idea I’ve been developing for quite some time involving using garrys mod to create a picture slideshow to tell a story. This exact concept has been done, in several mutations.. a webcomic, even a ‘machinima‘ (which is one of the funniest things in the world…) The difference with my idea is that it’s more of a freeform radio play, so it will tend to be a little more of a personality concept then the other two ideas. I have some amazing people to work with and I’m confident that it would be well-received, I just need the time to do it.
  • The third ‘main’ project idea I want to get made is mostly just a huge creative explosion into flash. It’s been, basically forever since I’ve made something creative and original in Flash, which is really really sad, because I’ve learned a lot of great stuff. I’m thinking what I’ll do will end up being something akin to a music video, with lots of programmatic and interactive elements. I basically want to try to run the gamut of my knowlege of Flash, my love for synched events to a song, my ability to program and my humble wierndess to make something crazy. I know exactly what I’d want to do, and yes, it involves cats, (also, pirates,) and cool music. We’ll see if I can get this made.
  • I still have been toying with the idea of turning tommannino.com into a sort of serious-face ‘professional’ blog. I’ve been fighting the urge to spread myself out but I think it’s pretty much established that this blog is more or less my internet link post, and I find that some things don’t really fit in, i.e. you like my links but don’t really want to hear about my personal crap… or the other way around, you might be interested in some cool Flash stuff I’m working on but don’t want to sift through youtube videos. There’s also the fact that I may or may not be in the precarious position of being somewhat of a ‘public figure’ with my new job… i.e. needing to be conscious of my image as it may reflect back on to the project I’m working on. We’ll see.
  • Thanks to the snowsaber for all of her painty help.
  • I am so fried right now that I think my memory and … intelligence, really, is affected. I’m going to sleep.
