I just had Portal for lunch, and by the end of my playtime I was shaking.
It’s been such a long time since I’ve actually felt the literal learning happen. I could hear my brain creaking. I’m also a complete head-over-heels sucker for games and stories that start with the horribly cliche ‘you wake up and have no idea what’s going on.’ I think it’s because the best of these kinds of games, by default and definition, are then required to deliver you into the world, because the character has to be delivered as well.
The writing is amazing as well, the way they craft the experience just makes you laugh and laugh. A masterfully dressed game.
I’m on the ‘heart cube’ level and instead of finishing it up, my coworkers were finishing up lunch so I showed them the first real puzzle level where you get to use the orange portal. I of course did the obligitory ceiling/floor portal ‘falling forever,’ then the left wall/right wall ‘running forever,’ the wall/floor ‘rolling down forever’ and then the floor/floor ‘bobbing forever.’ I think I blew up everyone’s mind, including my own.
I give it a pile of bajillion awesomes.
