Begging for Gas

I had to get gas today in Beverly Hills. I try to avoid it because I enjoy my arms and legs attached to my body, but I just forgot. When I step out of my car, a man in his early 40s steps away from his big Cadillac with a few dents in the fender, and walks up to me. He says he’s going to run out of gas if he passes the gas station, and if I could spare enough cash for a gallon of gas (3.25ish for the ‘cheap’ stuff at this station, sadly. 3.75 for premium =P). I would have thrown him a buck or two but I only had my card and didn’t want to deal with that awkwardness.
Con artist or sign of the times? What would you have done?
